Cleaning your undercarriage removes what's already there. Corrosion protection stops what comes next. In Southwest Montana, where road salt gets applied from October through April and unpaved roads are a way of life, an unprotected undercarriage is on borrowed time. Northern Blasting applies Woolwax corrosion protection as a standalone service or immediately following a dry ice blasting clean — giving the product the bare metal contact it needs to work the way it's designed to.
There are a lot of products in the undercoating and corrosion protection market. We use Woolwax because it's genuinely the best option for vehicles that live in real conditions — not because it's the cheapest or the easiest to apply.
Woolwax is a lanolin-based corrosion inhibitor, which means it works differently than rubberized undercoatings or oil-based sprays. Lanolin is naturally hydrophobic and self-healing — it creeps into seams, spot welds, and hard-to-reach cavities where moisture and salt like to hide, and it stays flexible rather than cracking over time. Rubberized coatings look good initially but eventually crack and trap moisture underneath, which creates the exact conditions you were trying to prevent. Woolwax doesn't do that.
It's the product used by serious rust prevention shops across the northern US and Canada, and it's what we'd put on our own trucks.
Woolwax performs best when applied to a clean surface. That sounds obvious, but most vehicles that come in for undercoating haven't been properly cleaned first — the product gets applied over a layer of road grime, mud, and salt residue, and the bond is compromised from the start.
When you book a Northern Blasting undercarriage clean and add Woolwax, we blast first and coat immediately after. The surface is clean, dry, and ready — and the Woolwax bonds to bare metal the way it's designed to. If you've had Woolwax applied elsewhere without a proper pre-clean, the protection you got was significantly less effective than it should have been.
Woolwax typically holds up for two to three years under normal driving conditions in Southwest Montana. Vehicles with heavy highway mileage, frequent off-road use, or exposure to particularly aggressive road salt application may benefit from reapplication closer to the two-year mark.
Northern Blasting tracks reapplication timing for every customer. When you're approaching the window, we'll reach out — you don't have to remember. A reapplication service is faster than the initial application since the surface preparation is lighter, and the cost reflects that.
A full Woolwax application covers every surface that benefits from protection:
Frame rails and crossmembers
Suspension components and brackets
Wheel well inner surfaces
Floor pan underside
Fuel and brake line routing areas
Axles and differentials
Any exposed metal surface in the undercarriage zone
We use approximately 1 to 1.5 gallons on a full-size truck or SUV. Larger vehicles — heavy trucks, long-bed duallies, diesel work rigs — require more product and are quoted accordingly.
Any vehicle spending winters in Montana is a candidate for Woolwax. Road salt is the primary accelerator of undercarriage corrosion, and Southwest Montana roads get heavily treated. If your truck is worth more than a few thousand dollars and you plan to keep it, corrosion protection is not optional — it's maintenance.
New and newer vehicles benefit the most from early application. Getting Woolwax on a newer truck before corrosion has started is dramatically more effective than trying to slow it down after the fact.
High-value trucks and work vehicles. A $60,000 diesel truck represents a significant investment. Woolwax every two to three years is the cheapest insurance policy available for that asset.
Fleet owners. Ranches, contractors, and businesses running multiple work vehicles in Southwest Montana can extend the service life of their fleet meaningfully with a regular Woolwax program. We offer fleet pricing — ask about it when you reach out.
